De-Coking: Why it is a must on Direct Injection Motors

Walnut Blasting and BG Induction Cleaning services are offered at Kinetech Motor Werkes! What is a De-Coke you may ask? De-Coking is a process that is taken to remove heavy carbon build-up from intake valves and from inside the combustion chamber. Cars require oxygen, spark and fuel to run. With modern Direct Injection engines, as you put your foot on the gas pedal, the car sprays gas into the combustion chamber of the engine, at that point the spark plugs ignite the gas which makes the car run. Carbon is a byproduct of this reaction. Carbon DOES INTERFERE with the vehicles normal operation and combustion as it alters the compression ratio, operation temperature and sensor readings. Carbon builds up and coats the intakes valves, combustion chamber and other parts of the internals of the motor. This can restrict the engines ability to breathe and effect the vehicles power.

What happens because of Carbon Build-Up?

Carbon build-up can cause a loss of power, random misfires, check engine lights, sluggishness, extended starting times and it can also cause pre-detonation which can be fatal to your engine!

How do we treat Carbon Build-up?

We treat carbon build-up in two ways: Walnut blasting or BG Induction Servicing. Walnut Blasting is the more expensive and abrasive approach which we use for more severe cases of build-up. With a Walnut Blasting, crushed up walnut shells are blown into the engine to remove the carbon quickly and carefully, then the vehicles oil is changed and so are the spark plugs to remove any traces of carbon from the engine. NOTE that this is only for very severe cases.

For less severe cases, we use BG Induction Service to break down carbon buildup inside the motor, which then gets blown out the exhaust upon the next vehicle startup. With this service, we typically recommend changing the vehicles oil and changing the spark plugs, but that only depends on the severity of the carbon.
