Does My BMW Need Synthetic Motor Oil?

Yes, BMW recommends synthetic motor oil for all of its automobiles. If you drive a different make, however, such as a Volkswagen, you have a choice of motor oils. Kinetech Motor Werkes is going to list the different types of motor oil below so you know what’s available. It’s important to stick to the oil type and weight recommended by your vehicle’s manufacturer unless certain exceptions are met. We are also going to list those exceptions below so keep reading.

Conventional

Most automobiles run on conventional motor oil making it the most popular oil on the market. This oil has been around for over a century. It is extracted from crude and, in some cases, has additives to boost its performance. Conventional motor oil works in just about every automobile aside from high-performance vehicles. While it’s suitable for older vehicles, as well, there are better options on the market. Conventional oil needs to be changed every 3,000 miles.

High-Mileage

Once your vehicle’s engine turns over 75,000 miles, it is considered a high-mileage engine. Older engines have a tendency to leak oil. As such, high-mileage motor oil was developed with additives to help prevent these oil leaks. Naturally, it’s a good idea to start using this oil once your tachometer reads 75,000 miles. This oil will protect your engine better and, again, help prevent oil leaks.

Synthetic Blend

Synthetic is all the rage on the auto service market, but this oil is more expensive than conventional oil. Many people would like some of the benefits of synthetic oil without having to pay its high price. One way to achieve this is to use a synthetic blend. This is both synthetic and conventional oil in the same mixture. It provides superior protection to conventional oil at a higher price, but it’s not as expensive as full synthetic. This oil also doesn’t need to be changed as frequently.

Synthetic

As we mentioned above, high-performance vehicles such as BMWs require synthetic oil to protect their engines. Synthetic also works well in areas that have extreme weather conditions between the summer in the winter. In fact, synthetic is often used in all automobiles in areas where the winter weather reaches below zero. Synthetic is also a good choice for older automobiles because it protects the engine better. This being said, it does not protect against leaks like high-mileage oil does.
