Signs My European Automobile’s Battery Is Dying

The average lifespan of the battery that is in the engine of your European automobile is about three to four years. You may get five years out of the battery, but you are really lucky if the battery lasts after that. We can replace the battery, so bring your vehicle to our European auto service shop if you are having any of the problems listed below. These are signs that the battery is going bad.

Hard to Start

A European automobile that is hard to start or requires frequent jump-starts needs a new battery. The engine will start to crank more often before it ignites if the battery needs to be replaced. In other words, instead of cranking once and starting, it may crank three or four times and then start.

Electrical Issues

You may also notice that your European beauty is having electrical problems. The power accessories may slow down or malfunction, or you may end up with dim headlights that make seeing at night nearly impossible. The interior lights will also be much dimmer than they normally are.

Corrosion/Grime

You can take a look at your European car’s battery to see if there is a problem such as corrosion on the battery cables and battery terminals. This corrosion is generally caused by a battery leak. As the acid and water leak out of the battery, they corrode the metal of the terminals and cables.

Rancid Odors

The corrosion may be accompanied by a rancid odor that surrounds the battery. This odor is a sign that you have sulfuric acid outside the battery, which is definitely where it should not be. Sulfuric acid has a strong, rancid odor that many people described as rotten eggs. Yuck!

Case Problems

The battery case can also be a sign that the battery needs to be replaced. The case can warp if there is a problem with the chemical reaction between the liquid and the plates inside the battery. The case can also crack or bubble. If the case looks strange, have the battery replaced right away.

Warning Light

Finally, your European automobile is equipped with a main computer chip that turns on dashboard warning lights when something goes wrong. In the case of the battery, the chip will turn on the battery light. You should only see this light lit briefly when you start your automobile.

We can help, so call us today. If you bring your European automobile to our shop, we will test the battery to see if it is holding a charge and generating enough electricity. If it isn’t, we will replace it.
