Signs My VW’s Transmission Is Going Out

You rely on your Volkswagen every day to get you to and from work. What would you do without it? Kinetech Motor Werkes works tirelessly to make sure you never have to be without your VW. In the case of your VW’s transmission going out, prevention is the best medicine, so bring your VW to our shop right away if you notice any of the following signs.

Gear Problems

Gear problems can include anything from grinding gears, refusal to shift gears, and slipping gears. Your Volkswagen should shift through the gear cycle seamlessly whether you drive a manual transmission and are shifting the gears yourself or have an automatic transmission. If you hear grinding noises between gears, if your VW doesn’t shift through the gear cycle, or if it slips out of gear, it’s important to have your transmission inspected right away because this can be a sign of transmission wear and tear.

Burning Odors

Burning smells coming from your automobile are never anything to play with. A burning odor could mean that your vehicle is on fire. If your transmission is overheating, it will smell hot. This overheating could be a sign that you don’t have enough transmission oil in the transmission. If it has been over 30,000 miles since you last had your transmission serviced, this is likely the case.

Humming in Neutral

Another sign of transmission problems is hearing humming sounds when your VW is in neutral. The only thing you should hear when your VW is in neutral is the sound of steady idling. If you hear humming or squealing noises, this is a sign that your transmission has a fluid problem or other issues. Another sign that your transmission is going bad is if your vehicle clunks when you put it into gear.

Fluid Leaks

Your Volkswagen’s transmission can leak fluid from the transmission pan, the gasket, the seal, the transmission hoses, or the torque converter. Transmission fluid is easy to identify because it is red and translucent. If the fluid is old, it might be brown. Transmission fluid generally leaks from the center of your VW rather than from underneath the engine.

Zero Response

Finally, your Volkswagen should go into gear when you put it into gear. If it refuses to do so, you have a serious problem brewing in your transmission. Shifting out of Park and into Reverse or Drive should not be a problem. Serious transmission damage is often accompanied by a refusal to go into gear. Your check engine light may also come on the dashboard if your transmission is not operating as it should be.
